Featured Rider: Tomas Aperlo

Tomas, an Argentinean currently living and working in Spain, stopped by for a couple of days to rest before taking on the Cherohala Skyway.  Tomas began his trip in New York and is headed to his parents’ place in Miami.  Leaving Spain, Tomas was faced with a problem.  The airline intended to charge over $120.00 to fly his bike.  Tomas told us, “The bike only cost about $30.00”.  So Tomas flew to New York and bought a bike off Craig’s List for $60.00.  He had a few mechanical problems, broken spokes and such.  He seems happy with his choice now that he has made a few repairs.  “Me and the bike know each other very well now”.

Tomas made his way to us following part of the Allegany Passage and the C&O Canal route.  From there he rode the Skyline Drive and Blue Ridge Parkway.  Tomas is very accustomed to touring in the Mountains.  He has toured extensively in the Andes in South America and currently rides in the Pyrenees in Spain and France.  He hopes to tour in the Alps soon.  One thing he encountered in the Smokies he was not accustomed to was bears.

Tomas said he followed the advice of a park ranger his first night in the Smokies and hung his food in a tree.  He said it was like “fishing for bears”.  And he caught a big one!  Tomas related how he spent the night awake with a bear trying to get at his food bag.  Tomas soon abandoned this method for one of his own devising.  Tomas began building a fence of sorts out of branches around his tent and leaving the food next to him.  As the bear approaches, Tomas hears the bruin breaking branches and jumps out of the tent and scares the beast away.

I am not a religious or spiritual person in the least, but I have begun praying for Tomas.

Catch up with Tomas, if you speak Spanish, at his blog: 5000 leguas  de viaje… en bicicleta! Or just look at the pictures.

Let’s hope he doesn’t spring out of his tent on a Mamma bear and her cubs… It wouldn’t be pretty.

I’m thinking today he will be just north of Atlanta and well out of bear country. Of course, there are far worse dangers in Atlanta. He was a very nice young man and had great stories of the road.
