Featured Rider: Andy – Code Name: Waldo

Andy (aka Waldo) found us in an unusual way.  He’s actually an Appalachian Trail thru-hiker who decided he was through hiking.  Beginning the AT at the southern terminus in Georgia he ‘hoofed it’ the hundred or so miles to the Nantahala Outdoor Center. Then in a moment of insight and clarity (brought on by a hot meal and a hot shower no doubt) came to the realization that, for him, hiking sucks.

So he ‘thumbed it’ down the hill into Bryson City and headed straight to the wisest person in town for guidance.  No not me, but a good guess.  He sought out our local bike mechanic, Andy at Bryson City Bicycles (magnetic attraction of Andys I suppose).  Andy (bike mechanic) advised Andy (through-hiking not thru-hiker) to cast off his wicked past filled with so much wasteful walking and take up the thrilling sport of bike touring.

Andy (who’s trail name and now road name is Waldo) equipped himself with a great touring bike and panniers, spent a couple of days with us, and is now ‘pedaling it’ eastward towards the coast of North Carolina.  He plans to meet up with his girlfriend at the Outer Banks before heading home to Virginia Beach.

Andy (Waldo) is a free spirited traveler who can easily shift to a whole new adventure if the path leads that way.  I admire that.  We often head out with more of a commitment to ‘the plan’ than a commitment to ourselves.  Andy has his priorities in order.  I wish him well on his new adventure.
