Raquel and I celebrated “Take a Kid Mountain Biking” day by taking two kids road biking.  But we were in the mountains and they did ride mountain bikes…so close enough.  Here are a few pictures.

Exploring Elkmont

September 30, 2011 2 comments

We’re off for a few days of bike exploring and fishing.

In an out of the way corner of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park’s Little River Valley is a region known as Elkmont.  The Little River and Jakes Creek have carved a narrow and somewhat flat valley with steep and rugged mountains on either side.  Early pioneers and settlers eked out a living by logging, hunting and distilling the local favorite beverage.  When the park was established in the 30’s many of the locals were allowed to stay and were granted lifetime leases.  These leases have all but expired (I suppose the lease holders must have expired) and the land is now officially part of the park.

The area is a beautiful wilderness and a great place to bike, hike and fish.  Early autumn is a good time to visit.  The fall colors are starting to show themselves and the early morning temperatures are brisk but bearable.  The summer crowds have left and the trout streams are less pressured so hopefully the trout are more willing to take a fly.

I’ll post some pictures when we return.  Thanks for reading, Jack
