Meanwhile over at Igor’s

Last October I received an e-mail from Igor Kovse to share with Velo Hobo readers.  Igor is an Ultralight world traveler and pioneer in Ultralight bicycle touring.  Since that post Igor has taken his Ultralight rig to Africa.  You can read the details of his journey here: Who’s Afraid of the Crocs?, and get some great tips on putting together a lightweight kit of your own here: Losing Weight (if you’ve been to this site before, you can use his site’s search feature for “brandNEW” to find the latest updates).

 Why tour lighter?

If you have been considering touring, but think you don’t have a proper bike for the job, think again.  If your bike can support your body weight, it can probably carry enough weight for a few days on the road.  Igor proves it could travel around the world.  Touring lighter is a great way to get a taste of touring without buying a lot of expensive gear.  You may find you really don’t need a full set of racks and panniers and that a good dry bag and seat post rack will do.

Thanks for reading, Jack

I admire him greatly but 5 kilos including his crocs? There’s got to be some comfort missing there.

Oh I’m sure. I need a few comfort items myself, pillow, a few pairs of clean bike shorts, coffee. My last trip out my kit weighed 18 pounds (8 kilos). I don’t think I carried anything I did not use. If the weather were warmer I might have been able to save a bit in clothing, but I think I am right about where I want to be. I guess it is mostly a personal choice. Balancing comfort on the bike with comfort off the bike.

    Thanks for the comment, Jack
